Melanie's Story

I had my first seizure when I was 12 but wasn’t diagnosed with epilepsy until I was 13. I remember my first seizure so vividly. I was at basketball practice and everything just went black. My seizures started off very mild, more like passing out and starring off into space. By the time I was 15 I was having a lot of grand mal seizures.

Lots of doctors and medications later, I finally found what works for me. Lots of doctors wanted to switch meds as soon as they seemed to work. Most meds made my seizures worse. By the time I was 19 I was having 2-3 seizures a day.  Finally by 20 I had them somewhat under control.  Now I’m 25 and only have mild seizures every so often.

When I was first diagnosed, I got made fun of. Nobody wanted to hangout with the girl who had seizures. Basically I was a freak to everyone. Now, I embrace my epilepsy. I show the rawness of it when it occurs. I’d not hide behind it.
